Professional & Technical Writing

Professional Writing

My professional writing classes taught me how to keep lines of communication clear, write to a varied team towards a specific goal, and effectively resolve conflict with a professional and peaceful tone. My final portfolio includes:

  • A research reference sheet that I used in real life for a roundtable conference presentation.
  • A client profile where I researched a client’s needs for a (fictional) commissioned job.
  • A multimedia setup and shutdown checklist for my local church’s multimedia team.
  • A media troubleshooting guide for my local church’s multimedia team.
  • A grant proposal to take intensive Greek courses at the University of Notre Dame.

Technical Writing

My technical writing courses were the most unique form of writing that I’ve encountered during my time at MSSU. I grew up more accustomed to creative writing and transitioned directly into academic papers. However, I found that some practices that I learned through tutoring in mathematics and teaching piano lessons were translated and sharpened through practicing technical writing. I discovered that I really enjoy learning new information and translating it for different audiences. My technical writing coursework can be found below.

Using Information Systems

I practiced working with Microsoft Office applications throughout this course with an emphasis on Excel. This helped me to be better prepared for operating with common applications in the workplace. At the end of the semester, I received an Excel 2019 Associate certification.

Intro to English Linguistics

In another one of my favorite courses at MSSU, I studied the building blocks of the English language. My introduction to English linguistics included a review of the International Phonetic Alphabet, a breakdown of how words are (re)formed, and how language adapts to suit different circumstances across time. This course helped me better understand the ways we can use language to draw connections and establish limitations. For my final project, I argued in favor of conversational prose in some forms of literature.

Internships

Administrative Assistant

In Spring 2023, I worked as an administrative assistant with Apostolic Revival Church in Joplin, MO. My main project was to create reference materials for the multimedia team. I ended up completing:

  1. Training and Troubleshooting Guide
  2. Setup/Shutdown Checklist
  3. Troubleshooting Reference Sheet

Technical Writer

In Summer 2023, I worked as a technical writer with test engineers at EaglePicher Technologies in Joplin, MO. I learned more about interviewing subject matter experts, writing technical documentation, and even some coding experience. During the internship, I was accepted for a technical writing position within the company.
